In today’s age of information overload, it is becoming increasingly difficult for parents to make seemingly simple decisions. Entering any supermarket or pharmacy, the children’s body care section greets us with cute drawings, colorful packaging, and loud promises: “100% natural,” “Eco,” “Bio,” “The gentlest for your baby.” However, when we look at the ingredient lists of these products, the reality is often starkly different.
“Greenwashing” orgreenwashingis a marketing strategy where companies spend huge resources to create a visual impression of the naturalness of a product, rather than to actually improve its composition. Since a child's skin is up to five times thinner than an adult's skin, its protective barrier has not yet fully formed. This means that the ability of a child's skin to absorb chemicals is significantly greater, and irritation occurs much faster.
In this blog post, we will delve into the details that cosmetic giants would like to keep secret and help you choose the safest for your baby.
Rule No. 1: Forget the front of the package
Marketers are masters of psychology. They know that a green leaf on a label or a matte, recycled paper package automatically triggers associations in the human brain of nature, safety and peace. But the terms “Natural” or “Organic” on the front of a package are mostly not legally protected. This means that a manufacturer can add 0.1% chamomile extract to a product based on cheap petroleum products and still legally call it “Natural Chamomile Shower Gel.”
Solution: Reading the INCI ingredient list.
INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) is an international system for listing ingredients. The most important thing to know: ingredients are listed in descending order. The first 5-7 ingredients usually make up about 80-90% of the total product content. If you see water (Aqua) and a long list of synthetic names follow, the product is only an illusion of natural.
When creatingONE:ZERO for Kidsline, we decided not to play that game. Our product INCI lists are short and transparent, with each ingredient serving a specific purpose, not marketing.
2. The biggest source of allergens - “Parfum” or fragrances
We all love the “baby smell,” but the truth is harsh: natural plant extracts rarely have the intense, sweet smell that popular brands offer. Under the name“Parfum”or“Fragrance”the manufacturer is allowed to hide hundreds of different chemical compounds, because they are considered “trade secrets”. Often these are phthalates - substances that help the scent last longer, but are linked to hormonal disorders in scientific studies.
For children with atopic dermatitis or sensitive skin, synthetic fragrances are one of the biggest irritants to the skin. Even if the product is called "Hypoallergenic", it may contain fragrances that are simply less aggressive.
ONE:ZERO for Kids philosophy:
We believe that a baby's natural scent is the most beautiful and calming. That's why our massage oil and bath foam are completelyfragrance-freeWe don't even use natural essential oils in our baby (0+) products, as they can be too strong for a newborn's sensory system.
3. Aggressive foaming agents: SLS and SLES
Parents and children love it when shampoo or bath foam forms a large cloud mountain. However, these rich foams are usually provided by cheap and aggressive surfactants:Sodium Lauryl Sulfate(SLS) andSodium Laureth Sulfate(SLES).
These substances are so powerful that they are also used in industrial degreasers and garage floor washers. On a child's skin, they act as an aggressor - literally "eat" the natural lipid layer, causing dryness, itching and even microcracks.
What to look for in a place?
Softer alternatives, such asCoco-Glucoside(derived from coconut) that we use in ONE:ZERO for Kids Intimate Wash Foam. It creates a fluffy, soft cloud that cleans gently without disrupting the skin’s natural pH.
4. Petroleum products substituting for vegetable oils
Many classic “baby oil” brands use Paraffinum Liquidumor mineral oil. It’s a by-product of petroleum refining, which is cheap, odorless, and never goes bad. But this oil is “dead.” It forms a non-breathable film (occlusion) on the skin that clogs pores and interferes with the skin’s natural thermoregulation.
Alternative:
Natural cosmetics use plant oils. For example, ourmassage oilsbased on sweet almond and avocado oils. Unlike mineral oil, vegetable oils contain vitamins (A, E, D) and fatty acids that really integrate into the structure of the skin and nourish it, allowing it to breathe. In addition, almond oil helps to soothe irritation caused by the use of diapers.
5. The conservative labyrinth: From parabens to phenoxyethanol
Any product that contains water can't be without preservatives, otherwise it would be full of bacteria in a couple of days. But the question is, what preservatives are used?
- Parabens:(Methylparaben, Ethylparabenu.c.) - widely criticized for their ability to mimic estrogen in the body and accumulate in tissues.
- Phenoxyethanol:A popular alternative to parabens, but its use is restricted in baby products because it can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract.
Natural and safe cosmetics use food-grade preservatives such asSodium benzoateandPotassium SorbateIt is these ingredients, which are understandable to the child's body, that we chooseONE:ZERO for Kidsproduction processes of products.
6. Colouring and visual tricks
Blue shampoo for boys and pink for girls? No plant extract in nature gives a neon pink colour. Synthetic dyes (CIwith a number, for example,CI 17200) is a completely unnecessary skin irritant that serves no function other than the visual appeal of the product itself. Children’s cosmetics should be as close as possible to their natural state - colourless or naturally cloudy. That’s why you won’t find any artificial pigments in our products.
7. The "Slow Care" philosophy: Why less is more
We live in a consumer culture that tries to tell us that a child needs a separate cream for hands, feet, face and every hour of the day. In reality, the child's skin benefits most from peace. Excessive use of products and frequent washing with aggressive soaps interfere with the development of the skin microbiome.
We,ONE:ZERO for Kids, we stick to the principle of “Slow Care”:
- Use only what is absolutely necessary.
- Choose multi-purpose products. For example, our massage oil is perfect for an evening ritual, for protecting dry cheeks, and for gentle scalp care (and your baby has cradle cap).
- Keep the list of ingredients to a minimum.Fewer ingredients means less risk of allergens.
This philosophy is also reflected in our design - we want bath time to be an aesthetic and peaceful moment for both the child and the parents.
Conclusion: Your voice is your wallet
Every time you choose a truly natural product, you are ensuring a safer and more peaceful environment for your child. “Greenwashing” will not disappear tomorrow, but your knowledge is the best weapon against it.
Next time you go shopping, don't let the cute pictures fool you. Flip the bottle over and check the ingredients list - the first five ingredients will tell you the whole truth about what's really going on your child's skin.
We all want the best for our children - and often that “best” means “no unnecessary stuff”. Get to know our vision of clean skincare and discoverONE:ZERO for Kidswhere nature meets science and a peaceful parent's conscience. 🐌🌿
